Local SEO: Master Google Business Profile and the Map Pack
February 03, 202610 min readTiago Silva Dal Bosco

If you have a physical business —a clinic, a restaurant, a store, a law firm— local SEO is the difference between showing up when someone searches "near me" or being invisible. Unlike traditional SEO, local SEO depends much less on domain authority and much more on the consistency and quality of information you provide to Google.

The main asset of local SEO is the Google Business Profile (known until recently as Google My Business). Mastering this profile, keeping your NAP citations consistent and earning reviews is what gets your business into the coveted map pack, the block with three businesses and a map that appears at the top of local searches.

In this guide you will learn to optimize every field of your profile, understand how the local algorithm works, build consistent NAP citations and beat competitors in your service area.

How the Local SEO Algorithm Works

Google uses three main pillars to rank businesses in local results:

1. Relevance

How well your profile matches the user's search. If someone searches "dentist in Florianópolis", Google looks for businesses whose category, keywords and services match. This means the primary category and keywords in services must align with what you actually do.

2. Distance

Google prioritizes businesses close to the user's location. Radius matters: a business 2 km away beats one 5 km away if everything else is equal. You cannot control distance, but you control what comes after: don't let distance be the only criterion favoring the competitor.

3. Prominence

How well-known and cited your business is. Reviews, links, citations, presence in directories and engagement history all count here. A clinic with 200 reviews at 4.9 stars will be considered more prominent than one with 5 reviews at 4.0.

Relevance + Distance + Prominence = Map Pack Position

What Changed in Recent Years

  • Google Business Profile no longer has its own app — management is done via browser or search/maps.
  • Profile posts gradually lose importance; focus returned to photos, reviews and complete information.
  • AI results and AI Overviews also reached local, but the map pack remains dominant for "near me" and city-name searches.

Optimizing Your Google Business Profile

The profile is free, but the cost of poor completion is invisibility. Let's go field by field.

Business Name

Use the exact, official Name of your business. Do not enter "Vida Plena Clinic: Best Dentist in Florianópolis" in the name field. Adding keywords to the name is prohibited by Google's guidelines and can result in your profile being suspended.

  • Correct: Vida Plena Clinic
  • Incorrect: Vida Plena Clinic | Dentist in Florianópolis | Implants

Category

The primary category is the strongest relevance signal. Choose the most specific category possible. For a dental clinic, "Dentist" is better than "Healthcare professional." You can add secondary categories, but the primary category defines the main focus.

BusinessCorrect primary category
Italian restaurantItalian restaurant (not "Restaurant")
Children's clothing storeChildren's clothing store (not "Department store")
Labor lawyerLaw firm + "Labor lawyer" secondary
Address and Service Area
For businesses operating from a fixed location: use the exact address with the correct ZIP code. For businesses that provide services at the client's location (plumbers, photographers, consultants): hide the address and define the service area by radius or regions.
Important: The service area should not be an overly extensive list of distant cities. Define the area you actually serve; Google detects inconsistencies.
Phone
Use a local phone number. The area code must match the business location. A number with another city's area code weakens the signal that it is a local number.
Business Hours
Enter your hours for every day of the week, including holidays (Google allows you to add special hours). Businesses with complete hours see more engagement and less user frustration. If you have different hours on special dates, be sure to enter them—Google values accuracy.
Description
The description should explain who you are, what you do, and who you serve. Use keywords naturally, without overdoing it. The limit is 750 characters; the first 100 are the most important.
"Clínica Vida Plena offers general dentistry, dental implants, and cosmetic dentistry in downtown Florianópolis. With over 15 years of experience and a team of specialists, we provide compassionate care and affordable payment plans. Schedule your consultation."
Photos and Videos
Businesses with photos receive significantly more clicks and calls than profiles without images. Photos are also a factor in engagement that contributes to prominence.
Add at least 10 high-quality photos.
Include a photo of the storefront (so users can find you).
Photos of the interior, the team, and products/services.
Photos of the dishes, for restaurants.
Update the cover photo and logo correctly.
Attributes and Services
Attributes are additional details that Google displays, such as "accepts credit cards," "parking," "wheelchair accessible," and "free Wi-Fi." Fill in all that apply; each one increases your relevance for specific searches. In the services section, list all the services you offer, including descriptions and prices whenever possible.
Reviews: The Engine of Local Prominence
Reviews are the most powerful local signal you can indirectly control. They influence visibility and, above all, CTR in the map pack: users click on the business with the best rating and the most reviews.
How to Get Reviews Ethically
Create a direct review link — use Google's official format.
Ask at the right moment — right after the sale or service, when satisfaction is high.
Personalize the request — instead of "rate our service", ask something specific that values the experience.
Automate — send the request via email/SMS/WhatsApp in post-service follow-up.
Respond to all reviews — positive and negative.
How to Respond to Negative Reviews
The rule is: professional in public, solution in private.
Thank for the feedback and apologize for the inconvenience (without admitting fault in legal disputes).
Invite to resolve privately ("contact us at phone X").
Never argue the case in public, with details or accusations.
Respond quickly — reviews without response signal neglect.
"Hi, Maria. We're sorry your experience didn't meet your expectations. Thank you for your feedback, which helps us improve. To better understand what happened and find a solution, please contact us via WhatsApp at (48) 90000-0000."
Review Incentives: What Is Forbidden
Google prohibits offering rewards in exchange for reviews (discounts, gifts, sweepstakes). This can result in suspension. You can ask for reviews, but you cannot buy them.
NAP Citations: The Consistency That Builds Trust
"NAP" stands for Name, Address, Phone. Citations are mentions of your business on other sites: directories, review sites, social networks, and professional associations. Google cross-references this information to confirm that your business is real and verify its location.
The Golden Rule: Absolute Consistency
Your business NAP must be identical everywhere. Even the slightest variation—such as “Street” vs. “Ave.” vs. “St.,” or “LTD” appearing only in some places—fragments the signal and confuses Google.

Where to Build Citations
Relevant Brazilian and global directories:
Google Business Profile (required)
Bing Places (don’t ignore it—it has a market share in Brazil)
Apple Maps
Facebook (business page)
Instagram (bio with address)
LinkedIn (company)
Guia Mais, Apontador, TudoAgenda, Consulta Empresas
Professional associations (depending on the industry)
Niche review sites (Doctoralia, iFood, Trivago, etc.)
Local press and regional news sites
Priority Order
High-authority directories (Google, Bing, Facebook, LinkedIn)
Niche-specific directories (more relevance)
Brazilian local directories (geographic signals)
Anywhere else your business may be mentioned (news, partners)
Citation Management with Tools
For businesses with multiple locations, tools like Yext, Semrush Local, or Birdeye automate the distribution and monitoring of citations. For a single business, manual work using a spreadsheet is sufficient; consistency is what matters.
Local Content: Pages That Reinforce Relevance
A Google profile doesn't work on its own. Your site needs pages that reinforce the local signal.
Mandatory Pages for Local SEO
Home page with complete NAP in the footer (structured data included).
About page with history, team and location.
Contact page with form, embedded map and NAP.
Service pages with regions served.
City/neighborhood pages when you serve multiple regions.
Structured Data Markup (LocalBusiness)
The LocalBusiness schema tells Google exactly who you are and where you are:
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Dentist",
  "name": "Clínica Vida Plena",
  "image": "https://www.vidaplena.com.br/img/logo.jpg",
  "url": "https://www.vidaplena.com.br",
  "telephone": "+55 48 90000-0000",
  "priceRange": "R$ 100 - R$ 300",
  "address": {

    "addressCountry": "BR"
  },

  },

    }
  ],
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.facebook.com/clinicavidaplena",
    "https://www.instagram.com/clinicavidaplena"
  ]
}

Service + Region Pages

For each service, create a page that answers "where" and "for whom." Example for an electrician in Florianópolis:

  • /residential-electrician/
  • /residential-electrician/santinho/
  • /residential-electrician/campeche/

Each regional page needs unique content—not just a different neighborhood name. Discuss the region’s actual characteristics, local points of interest, and testimonials from clients in that neighborhood.

The Map Pack: How to Appear in It

The map pack (a group of three businesses plus a map) appears in search results with strong local intent. To get listed there and stay there:

  1. 100% complete profile — all fields filled, photos, services, hours.
  2. Correct primary category — without it, you don't even compete.
  3. Steadily growing reviews — volume + freshness + responses.
  4. Consistent citations — same NAP everywhere.
  5. Real engagement — clicks on call button, directions, site visits.
  6. Physical proximity — unchangeable, but you maximize the rest.

Differences Between "Near Me" and "City" Searches

  • "near me" → prioritizes distance; the map pack dominates.
  • "best dentist in Florianópolis" → prioritizes prominence; local organic results compete with the map pack.
  • "dentist Trindade Florianópolis" (neighborhood) → Google understands local intent based on the neighborhood even without "near me."

FAQ
What is Google's Map Pack?
It's the block of results featuring three businesses and a map that appears at the top of local searches (such as "restaurant near me" or "dentist in Florianópolis"). Appearing in this section is the primary goal of local SEO, because it dominates the first screen and captures the majority of clicks. Ranking is based on relevance, distance, and prominence, and a well-optimized Google Business Profile is the main factor you can control.
How long does local SEO take to show results?
Newly optimized profiles can appear in the map pack within 2–6 weeks, depending on local competition. However, consistent results and high rankings for competitive terms (“best X in the city”) depend on accumulated reviews and citations—a process that takes 3–6 months. Since most local competitors have poorly completed profiles, businesses that do the basics well tend to stand out quickly.
Do I need to pay to appear on Google Maps?
No. Google Business Profile is free, and the map pack is organic. Google Ads may display ads above local results, but inclusion in the pack depends on optimization, not payment. The only cost is the time it takes to set up the profile correctly, take high-quality photos, and manage reviews and citations.
Is it worth investing in paid directories like Yext?
For single-location businesses with a limited budget, no: manually updating a citation spreadsheet covers the basics. For multi-location networks or brands that need to manage a large number of locations, automated tools save a considerable amount of time and ensure consistency. Evaluate the number of locations and the monthly cost before signing up.
How does local SEO interact with AI Overviews?
AI Overviews already include local answers (“What is the best Italian restaurant near me?”), but the map pack still dominates searches with travel intent. To be cited in AI answers, keep your profile complete, earn reviews, and produce high-quality local content that answers specific questions (“best aesthetics clinic in downtown Florianópolis”). The combination of a strong profile, local content, and consistent citations covers both formats.
